What is a Capo and what do they do?

You might have seen guitarists use these when they're playing. Let's talk about what they do. The capo essentially does one of two things.

1. It can change the pitch of the song, allowing you to play in different keys using the same chord shapes.

For example, if we play a G with no capo, we can put it on the second fret, which transposes it up two half steps or one whole step. So now if we play a G, it makes an A sound, and we've changed the key of the song.

2. The second thing it does is allow you to play in the same key using different chord shapes. Let's take Hotel California, chords - B minor and F#7.

But if we put a capo on the second fret again, we can still play in the key of B minor, but we just change the chord shapes. So we can now play an A minor to get a B minor, and we can play an E7 to get an F#7. They're much easier for beginners because there's no barre chords.
